You might have a problem if...

Edited for pictures...
(I know, two posts in one day after two weeks of silence... strange but true)

I went to Fabricland on my lunch hour (on Dundas, west of the 427).  I wanted about 20cm of black broadcloth to make a movie quality kippah, my stash was not coming through for me.

That came to $1.35 plus tax, so... $1.52.  Plus a little elastic in case I need some for the actresses costume.

And my bill?  $25.31.

There was this lovely fabric, on a table full of "European Imports" on for half price, $7.50/m.  A few remind me of the viscose we saw at Downtown Fabric in August.  Content wise, a mix of polyesters, cotton blends (including silk/cotton), viscose (bought one last week, so light and airy), most marked as being from Germany...  but today I was seduced by a fabric that makes me wish I had a camera with me at work.

I even brought my fabric into the office, I couldn't leave it behind in the car.

I've already pulled it out once.

I want to open it all up...  but that's not work appropriate behaviour.

In lieu of pictures... imagine this...
  • Dark grey at one end
  • Dove grey at the other
  • At the switching point...
  • Orchid - bigger than my stretched out hand

  • Stargazer lilies trailing towards the dark end of the fabric

  • One repeat per meter.
  • Cotton with 2% spandex (stretch going from dark to light)
  • Fairly heavy weight, this is not blouse material
  • Sturdy enough to get machine wash warm, tumble dry low, cool iron washing instructions
Oh I've pulled it out again to be sure I'm describing that right.

What the hell do I make with this?  I can't let it get too precious to cut into, but this has to be a planned project to make the most of it.

It's so soft... and lovely...

Proportion wise, it reminds me of the butterfly fabric that Allison C made into a maxi dress.  But this doesn't have the drape of her jersey.

I bought 2.2m to be sure I had some space where the flowers repeat.  Can anyone think of a pattern that's intended for a boarder to run through the middle of the fabric?

It's so pretty.

I'll just look at it one more time....

  1. Oh man, that sounds divine! I think I'd have to see it to make recommendations though. ;-)

    1. I can appreciate that. When I'm home I'll quickly post a picture before heading out to bowling, until then, I'll just look at it again.

  2. Ok, Do they have more or did you buy it all? :o Can I bribe you into deleting the location of that Fabricland from your post? ;) Grey with orchids!! hey, that's one orchid, I can't kill. Me wants it, Me needs it.

When I read what I just wrote, I sigh! So much for thinking this morning that I have ENOUGH fabric. That term is an oxymoron.

I can't think of a pattern for you, sorry! All that comes to mind is stretching it out and hanging it up as art. I really need to pay a visit to that store!

    1. It really does look like wall art. The flower part is the length of my shoulder to a little lower than my waist. They still had quite a bit on the roll (it's rolled open, pattern out, look near the back cutting table/discount area).

It's not often you see a pattern repeating in the middle of the fabric. When I saw Allisons dress I thought that was strange, only to end up in the same "Oh pretty.... now what?" situation.

Maybe I'll sneak one more peek...

  3. Oooh, that's fancy-special. You should frame it! :-)

    1. Fancy-special is about right - and yet still machine washable.

  4. It is very pretty. Would make a nice maxi or similar.

    1. Given the proportions, maxi is probably best. The orchid could sit at my waist with the lilies trailing up.

  5. Oooooooooo, soooooooo nice! I too stumbled on that section in my local Fabricland, and I bough a different print. I couldn't stop myself from buying the entire roll (it was almost 5m). I already made a tunic/tshirt out of this... I also vote for a maxi!!! Just gorgeous!

    1. It was a great table, wasn't it? Some of the colours/prints weren't my thing but all of it looked like it would be a great choice for someone. 5m? Wow, that's a whole lot of fabric, but it sounds like it really had to excited to already make up a tunic.

  6. That fabric looks like it would make a beautiful partition to break up a room. Very gorgeous! Good find :)

    1. That's absolutely true. You know if you were looking for fabric for a partition you wouldn't see something like that.

  7. Bahaha! My Fabricland has the same fabric! One of the staff made a gorgeous kimono-esque robe with it---it was stunning! Can't wait to see what you do!

    1. It is pretty, isn't it? I don't know that I would have considered a robe but it would be pretty.
I have come to realize I have inspriation hanging in my own bedroom. My SIL is Vietnamese so for the wedding I wore a traditional Vietnamese dress ao dai (which I absolutely slaughter the pronounciation of). Fabric is printed to end up with patterns in particular spots.

  8. An ao dai is a great idea! The flowers would go well with that theme. The fabric is beautiful! A friend got me a cut of silk with a HUGE motif on it and I have absolutely no idea what to do with it--and I am not usually stumped by difficult prints. I'll be curious to see what you end up with!

    1. Big prints certainly take some thought, but it feels like if I can figure something out it's going to be stunning. I bet the same is true with your piece of silk. One day it will all click together.
